Hassan, who had millions of fans in India and Pakistan, had been admitted to Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi a few days ago. He had been in serious condition and was on a respirator.
"My father died at 12:22 pm after a long struggle against various ailments," his son Arif Hassan said.
Hundreds of fans gathered at the hospital to learn of his death.
Hassan was born into a family of traditional musicians in Luna village in India's Rajasthan state in 1927. His family moved to Pakistan when the division in 1947.
Hassan cut back on his exhibition at the end of 1980 due to illness.

Mehdi Hassan ruled the Pakistan film industry along with Ahmed Rushdi. He received a number of awards and honours, including Tamgha-e-Imtiaz (Pride of Performance) and Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the Government of Pakistan, Gorkha Dakshina Bahu by the Government of Nepal and the Saigal Award from India.
